Bed Bug Misconception #1

Don’t get irrational. Keep your belongings, just kill those bed bugs with heat instead!

People react in funny ways when they find out they’ve got a bug infestation. They tend to overreact, taking unnecessary action, when they discover bed bugs in their home. It’s totally understandable, though. They know that the quicker they react, the quicker they get rid of the bugs.

Although it’s highly recommended that you take immediate action if you discover bed bugs, knowing just what you’re supposed to do could save you a lot of money.

Once upon a time…

Once upon a time, our technicians arrived at a customer’s home to begin the heat treatment. When they arrived, the house was completely empty. It wasn’t that the homeowners had simply removed the furniture, which is completely unnecessary (link to previous post); they had actually thrown everything out – bedding, furniture and all. We were dumbfounded. Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident. Now, we inform our customers early on to leave everything where it is.

Why had they decided to ditch their belongings?

Fear: The first and most obvious reason for throwing everything out is fear. If you’ve ever had bed bugs you know they’re really, really hard to get rid of. Homeowners think that if they simply get rid of everything the problem will solve itself. This is an extremely costly solution, and not even guaranteed to work.

Bad advice: Another reason people throw everything out is because an “expert” told them to do so. After a mass infestation in a US city apartment complex, the local newspaper advised those who were battling pest infestation to throw out all of their furniture. And so they did. But then their neighbours spotted what seemed to be perfectly good furniture in the dumpster, and decided to take it home. Unfortunately, they inherited their neighbour’s problem.

Frustration: Many homeowners have already tried several methods before calling us. They’re fed up. They’re frustrated. Getting rid of their furniture is the one thing they haven’t tried, and all they want is to be rid of the pesky bed bugs forever. So they throw out everything, however irrational it seems.

Why disposing of your furniture isn’t unnecessary

Our heat treatment kills bed bugs dead. Contrary to what many people think, the treatment does not damage furniture (link to previous post). It’s true, bed bugs will make their homes in your bed and furniture, but heat will drive them out. In fact, there are very few things that need to be removed before treatment can begin. Before you throw anything away and waste your hard-earned money, please contact one of our knowledgeable technicians. We can supply you with a list of items that we recommend you remove.
